If your card is very new and has "glitches" with the older driver in the 
resticted modules package (fglrx) then yes, the driver off their website 
may fix the issue.

But... for disadvantages, every time the kernel updates, you will need 
to recompile the fglrx module or X wont start.

Gets old after awhile.  If you don't have any issues with the one in the 
repos, I'd stick with it.
