Does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace kill the X-server (give you a black screen)
even when the keyboard otherwise doesn't work?

If yes, then I suspect a problem in your user account. Configure KDM
to ask for a password on login, and check to see if the keyboard works
on the KDM screen. You might want to configure it to log you in
automatically after a set time, so that if the keyboard _doesn't_ work
you will still get logged in.

If no, then I suspect a system-wide problem. Boot into the rescue mode
from the grub screen, get a console, and see if the keyboard works
there.
