Make that sudo umount /dev/sdb1

In a terminal type 'df' without the quotes to see which is the USB drive
If it is sdb1 the commands are:-
umanout /dev/sdb1
sudo mke2fs /dev/sdb1
The first unmounts the device as you can’t format a mounted device and the
second will format it as ext2
