installed a little kde, it switched to it on the reboot, and most stuff is missing, no access to a shell of any kind

Have you got a spare keyboard lying around? Have you tried stopping the
computer, changing the keyboards around, and rebooting?
It might be worth booting from a live CD and looking at your xorg.conf (or the
Fedora equivalent) if you have one, and creating one if there isn't one
there.
