SSHD Configuration question

Alvin! You're a beautiful genius! route -n showed my default route for a DHCP
address. Got rid of that, built the correct route by hand and now the SSHD is
working. I'll need to check it from home to be sure but I'm confident based on
my testing here that it'll be ok.
This leads me to another {K}Ubuntu question: why does Ubuntu just assume that
I'm going to be using DHCP during installation instead of asking me?
