Gimp shutting off monitor

Probably a stupid question, but ...
How do you know you couldn't switch to a console if your monitor was off?
And have you used Ctrl-Alt-Del before with the monitor off, so you know all
the keystrokes?
The reason I ask, is I had a monitor that turned off when the screensaver
came on. And turning the monitor off and on didn't do anything. So I
learned the keystrokes for Ctrl-Alt-Del, so I could try Logout, Suspend,
etc. Pretty much all of them worked for me to get the monitor back on.
