Some PC does not provide OS CD's but you are supposed to make your own back-up CD or DVD through their facility that will restore back the PC to the same condition as when you bought it. Do this first. I you have an original XP CD provided by Acer, then you can proceed. Cloning your XP partition to a DVD? Don't think that will work.

There are windows based programs, but right now I cannot recall any. Use GParted by using Kubuntu CD,(Ubuntu comes with GParted, not Kubuntu) do not install Kubuntu yet! At the trial, install GParted by opening a terminal and type "sudo apt-get install gparted". Then run Gparted by typing "sudo gparted"

If you are scared off now, perhaps if you have a "D" drive, you may just use the d drive as Kubuntu partition. Back up data in d drive first.

Some new users are afraid this messes up Windows. Actually, if you don't, this will mess up Windows or won't fire up Kubuntu. Note, your Windows MBR will be gone. Good. That's alright! However, if you choose to remove Kubuntu later, you will need to reinstall the Windows MBR. Make sure you know how. This forum is not the place to ask how. Most of us don't use windows anymore.

For example, I revisited my Windows lately because I wanted to check the Flash in Windows. Found out there is a Flash 10 now for windows, but Flash, any version, is still not available for 64 bit Windows browser. Had to use 32 bit browser. Flash 10 (32bit)

Thanks for your input (and humor). O:-)
To get to the real point. I wasn't supplied the DVD with my acer. They
did make a "restore" folder that (I hope) by copying it and burning that
onto a DVD I'll be able to use if needed. The other two safety measures
I am taking is:
1. Do a dual boot at the moment (XP & Kubuntu). This MAY change if I
need the whole disk later on.
2. I have made an image of the XP (with all it's installations) onto an
external HD. I used clonezilla but got many error notices that I may
redo the clone using another clone program.

After that I'll install Kubuntu Jaunty. Probably also from the external HD.
