Lindsay, that's very useful info.
I read the phonon docs on linux.com and the wikipedia article, and both
present phonon as a conduit to backend audio engines. Since pulse
provides an engine (according to its wikipedia article; wondered what
that daemon was doing on my machine) then I'm guessing that phonon simply
makes calls to pulse, since pulse also provides an API.
Thus, pulse seems like a good choice for KDE with phonon as its local
API, which looks like an adapter (a type of wrapper) to pulse's API, plus
the 'Solid' stuff to come.
