Changinnng to default BIOS settings has created problems.

This is "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" to kill your X

Note: There have been changes in Jaunty. So:

If it does not work in Jaunty, try "Ctrl-Alt-F2" to get to the second tty.
After login, you might kill the non-working X with
sudo killall kdm
