You can just install the XFCE desktop and run that as default.  You will still 
have all the KDE apps ready and usable.  I do that on an old laptop and it 
definitely runs faster.  I never did any real testing, so your mileage may vary. 
    They even tried to make Xubuntu 9.04 better looking.
