Using names, not IP addresses, in home network

I don't understand why that necessarily changes anything.
I prefaced my remarks with the explicit assumption that he has root access.
If the assumption holds, then the fact that it happens to be a router
makes no difference.
If the assumption doesn't hold, then we need more information.
I mean, basically the OP is saying "I need the DHCP function X; how do I
get it?" (I use "X" because I can't recall off the top of my head what
option is used to return names in DHCPOFFERs) The answer depends on the
details of how one configures DHCP on the device. If it's the standard way,
then the answer is as given; if it's not the standard way, then we need to
know how one configures DHCP on the device.
