I don't know "normal," but I have always experienced the same thing, on KDE 3 
or 4. For instance, when dragging a bunch of messages to the Trash in my Gmail 
account, the messages disappear one at a time,  and I am unable to open any 
other messages in the folder until the operation concludes.
