Very inteersting. kdepim is one of the first apps that I install on a
new Kubuntu build, in fact, it is the first item in my 'new-build'
script. However, just to play along I tried to install it anyway and
sure enough, apt-get installed an additional 16 packages and now the
problem 'went away'.

Thank you for the tip. Alexander, and I will double check that the
packages that I _think_ are install are in fact installed before I
start troubleshooting.
