I had a similar problem with Fedora.

Our two main third party repos that had the codecs for things like
mplayer, xine and kaffine were not always in step with each other. I
found that freshrpms supplied the libraries that worked, while I had
problems, like you're having, using the Livna repo. I've not used
Kubuntu long enough to advise you but if there are multiple sources, I'd
trying using only one of them first, and if that doesn't work without
what I called "stuttering", then rip it all out, and install from
another source. That was around Fedora 7. Xine stuttered like crazy. It
took a complete re-install from another source to fix it for me. What
version of kaffine and xine are you running??

trouble shooting with a shotgun. Ric
