Reading up the the above link, I think so too. Let us see how it works out.

OK, I removed the one line (Driver "radeon") that I had added. I am
attaching the xorg.conf (which is practically empty) and a stripped
down version of Xorg.0.log (blame me if I snipped off any important
line and kept the unimportant ones). I have added some comments (look
for '## <<<<<<<<<' at the end of some lines). The main points are
these:
1. The "glx" module being loaded is from vendor="NVIDIA Corporation".
I guess this is a hangover from my earlier driver. `dpkg -l | grep
nvidia` shows:
ii nvidia-glx-new
ii nvidia-kernel-common
ii nvidia-settings
The only one (EE) line in the log seems to support this surmise.
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
Am I right? Solution? Purge nvidia-*?
2. Which actual driver is being used to drive the video card is not
clear to me. Looking into Xog.0.log, I see that all the three --
"ati", "radeon", and "int10", drivers are being loaded!!! I have
marked those lines in the attached log (look for ## <<<<<<<<<).
Also here is the glxinfo output:
$ glxinfo

There is nothing in there... empty => no proprietary cards??

Thanks for the wikipedia link, the information there also says that my
card 'should' have full 3d support. For the Envy, you are right, the
packages are envyng-{gtk,qt,core}. I'll try them if I need the
proprietary fglrx drivers. They are only for the prop-binary drivers,
right?
