Q: how to share printer in hardy?

So far I've only used Dapper Server as a print server, and I've not
succeeded in getting Vista to print to it, but with XP it's a piece of cake.

Install CUPS on the server. Remote configuration by web browser is
disabled by default with Dapper. Might be different with Hardy, I
don't know, but with Dapper you'll have to find a how-to to enable it
if needed. If you're using a desktop machine as the server, no
problem, just use http://localhost:631 and you should get CUPS
administration. Add your printer(s). Create classes and add printers
to them if you like.

If you're running a firewall, make sure it lets port 631 in.

On your XP machine, add a printer, choose the networked printer
option, next, then the third option for a printer connected to the
internet or home/office network, enter
http://serverIPaddress:631/printersorclasses/nameofyourprinterorclassontheCUPSserver
next, tell it to use the generic postscript driver, (MS Publisher
Imagesetter seems to work for me), next, and that's about it.

No messing around with Samba.

Does this help?
