converting video files

Dear all


I am trying to convert some avi files to windows readable 
files...I have a zune and want to use it for both video and audio. I do 
have a command line program but does anyone know of an opensource linux 
program for converting video files?
Actually..............ffmpeg is installed and if anyone knows of a good set of 
instructions that I could follow that would be good.
