synaptics touchpad on ubuntu eee

I have tried "on" and "true" and neither seem to work.

I am getting the feeling that my X on 8.04.1 is controlled by something other 
than /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  I have two machines at work where all of the 
sections in that file are empty and yet X is functioning.
