I just noticed a few things. First, my xorg.conf did not have anything
about synaptic touchpad in it, so I tried adding it and X will not start
with anything about the touch pad in xorg.conf. I just had to repair X
to get my desktop working again. Also, in the wiki I read it mentioned
altering shmconfig.fdi instead by doing the following:

"<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
   <match key="input.x11_driver" string="synaptics">
    <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">true</merge>
   </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>"

I did that and it did not seem to work for me.
