I originally posted this on Dell-users mailinglist but thought perhaps
it could help someone on this list too. Note that there are steps to be
done before diving into this, such as enabling a ppa repository w Dell
specific files. Instructions found on Dell Linux wiki:
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_8.04
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hardware: Dell Vostro 1400 / Inspiron 1420 "all Intel" cards
Kubuntu 8.04.1
After upgrade to kernel 2.6.24-21 I lost sound and modem. Following Dell
wiki steps I could get sound back but only by removing modemdriver that
I need on daily basis.
Mario Limonciello (Dell) advised me to do the following command:
# apt-cache policy linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic
that gave the following output:
inux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 2.6.24-21.32
Version table:
2.6.24-21.32 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
2.6.24-21.30Dell1 0
500 http://ppa.launchpad.net hardy/main Packages
NOTE this is before upgrade. Seeing "Dell1" I upgraded with known
results. Now after some analysing I noted that the Candidate version is
actually from hardy-updates, not Dell PPA....
I edited sources.list to disable hardy-updates, then "sudo aptitude
update". I then did:
# sudo apt-get remove linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic
followed by
# sudo apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic
I then removed the modemdriver and reinstalled it
Rebooted and voila! Sound and modem working....
Also a strange bug in K3b disappeared, I could not burn CDs (only
discovered today)
I have now uncommented hardy-updates in sources.list and following that
am now "nagged" to upgrade linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic...
I now get:
# apt-cache policy linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-21-generic:
Installed: 2.6.24-21.30Dell1
Candidate: 2.6.24-21.32
Version table:
2.6.24-21.32 0
500 http://zw.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
*** 2.6.24-21.30Dell1 0
500 http://ppa.launchpad.net hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Candidate version is once more from Ubuntu Kernel Team. Am NOT going to
update. Problem solved for now but this was a tricky one...
Regards,
Sinclair
