It must have come out around the same time as Neuromancer, and I saw the
potential, but it was primitive, and it was certainly not 3d.

The "software" would be pointless.  It's not 3d, anyway.  And there's no
need to change X - that's doing the job of actually rendering windows, but
I see no reason that Panda couldn't be your desktop.
