Okay Glenn, for your information and that of list members I am going
to post what I found out this am.

I did a fresh install of kubuntu 8.04 on a new 160 GB drive in my sons computer.

I had the 24-19 series kernel installed fresh, I then installed the
envyng package and allowed it to install
the nvidia packages.  I then ran the adept-updater and allowed it to
upgrade all packages.  Upon rebooting it
took about 2 minutes longer than expected and kdm kept respawning,
after that wait the nvidia logo splashed
and kdm finally started with full acceleration.

So, it would appear to rebuild the module as needed on a kernel update.
