Here is a pretty good intro to bug reporting for Kubuntu.

https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Bugs/Reporting

Bug reporting is dead simple, always appreciated, and a good way to get
started with contributing to free software.

But there are lots of other ways. Are you a good writer? Consider helping your
favorite application out with documentation. Documentation doesn't just mean
man pages, it can be tutorials, real book-style manuals, first-run
walkthroughs. Your imagination is the only limit. My favorite example of non-
traditional documentation is the Scribus manual:
http://docs.scribus.net/index.php?lang=en&page=intro Another great example
is the internal help pages for Basket Notes, written as Basket pages. Also,
emacs. Yeah, it's a beast (500p?), but it's been a 20-year collaborative labor
of love, and it shines through when you read it. People who are afraid to tell
a little story or crack a quick joke in their manual take themselves too
seriously. The emacs manual is actually what inspired me to start doing
documentation.

I'm a big booster of contributing through documentation. Really good, really
accessible free documentation is the grease that keeps free software turning
around, and it's something that not a lot of people are doing.

best wishes-
pete
