Or not :-) This is a debian-based distro - which means that just because
Ubuntu packages things up nicely in a semi-annual release, and provides a
clean upgrade path for doing that, doesn't mean you're bound to it. If you
want to upgrade everything _but_ KDE you can do that. Read about
apt-pinning, change your sources.list to point to 8.10, do "aptitude
update; aptitude full-upgrade --simulate" and see what you need to pin. It
won't be simple - but if you wanted simple you'd stick to Ubuntu releases.

Except that 8.04 wasn't an LTS release for Kubuntu, either...
