In some ways this is a false choice as many who stuck with Dapper know.  As 
app improvements come out — and it is really about the apps, not the Desktop 
Environment — you are locked out by the LTS.  The LTS is a great server 
choice, but not so good with desktops.  Even for hard core work, you are 
locked out of important OOo bug fixes.

IMO, the choices are
	* Use Gnome until KDE 4 works reliably, and
	* hope that KDE 4 is fixed before Joey Jackal (9.04) comes out so you don't 
have a hard time upgrading from 8.04
