OK.  I think I see what you are talking about.  We have a windows server named 
python.  I have its shares mounted at /mnt/python/.  If I open a document 
from /mnt/python, it is almost instantaneous.  If I try to open the same 
document from smb://rhd.org%5cart@python/ I have waited 5 minutes and still 
doesn't open.  Both tests were done by clicking on the file in konqueror with 
no funning OOo.
