Why use a virtual machine?

    Correct.  That is why I am native in WinXP for gaming but VM the Linux
box.  I don't game often in Linux and don't need 3D in Linux (no compiz).
Since all of the applications I use run perfectly fine in the VM I don't mind
this solution.

    The reverse that most people look for is to run must-have Windows
applications on Linux.  As long as they don't require 3D having a VirbualBox
with WinXP installed provides excellent compatibility for applications.

    As for your situation, if the games are sufficiently old they'll probably
work with Wine.  Usually it is the newer games that have Wine troubles.
