You would need to move the boot partition to an area that is closer to the 
beginning of the hard drive.   A BIOS is limited to how far out on the disk 
it can reach to boot.

I think you would eliminate this problem by installing grub in the MBR (master 
boot record) which is at the very beginning of the disk.   The initial stages 
of grub could then boot the kernel from wherever you placed it.
