VGA mode not supported

When do you get this message? At the very beginning of booting the PC or 
when X should be started?

Are you sure? A 4:3 17" TFT should support 1280x1024 imho.

maybe start with "sudo lspci |grep VGA", thus letting us know about your 
graphics board?
