Donn:
Try this tutorial from slicehost out. It describes how to set up iptables.
I did, and have a Hardy server running nicely on my virtual slice:

http://articles.slicehost.com/2008/4/25/ubuntu-hardy-setup-page-1

For the iptables to save, you will need to use this syntax, sudo alone
is not enough:

sudo su -c "iptables-save > /etc/iptables.up.rules"

I recommend both slicehost and their great tutorials for setting up
web servers on Ubuntu.
Check them out.

Cheers,
