kubuntu 8.10 kwin crash

Hi all,
As soon as the kwin start, it crashes w/o any visible errors and X restarts.
I tried 8.10 using Ubuntu Studio and that works fine with Gnome. After installing kubuntu packages, as soon as the KDE window appears, it goes back to the gdm/kdm window. There are no apparent errors in Xorg log file. The same behaviour happens if I run kwin from the rescue shell. I can run any window manager but calling kwin causes instant crash.
More interestingly, the Kubuntu 8.10 CD does the same on this machine. The graphics card is a built-in Via on an Asus board. I know the Kubuntu CD is fine since it works perfectly OK under VMWare.
If I start gnome and run kdestart, since there is already a window manager running, kwin doesn't start and the rest of the KDE software works OK. Obviously that's an extremely weird way of using KDE. :)
Thinking it's a permission problem, I tried the same with a completely brand new user and a clean /tmp and that didn't fix it either. The base installation is a stock Ubuntu-Studio installation with no encrypted partitions, file systems or anything special.
Is there any particular log file I can check for errors?
Does this happen to be a common problem?
Cheers,
