You should have used the alternate CD. Konqueror is fine and it is
easy to make it the default file manager. Dolphin is quite dumb.
Simply putting in a new xorg file works fine.
One needs to read the KDE-4+ system administration documentation to
configure kde-4+. The help documentation is not in sync too.

adept or apt-get could have done that for you
