Trying to install 8.10

I have an athlon64 home built machine. It runs DVDs fine and also
burns them (in a different DVD unit).

I downloaded the 64bit version of Kubuntu 8.10 and burnt it to disk
(CD). However when running it to install, it stops when the screen
goes totally white and seems to freeze. I cleaned the reader DVD, and
the same thing happened.

So I downloaded the i386 version of 8.10, and burnt it to CD. However
this disk did not install completely, but the install stoped at a
totally white screen. I left it for over half-an-hour before "pulling
the plug".

Finally, I amended the BIOS to boot from the burner DVD drive, but the
install stopped at the white screen. Apart from burning Cds to
overcome a bad burn (I have a number of coasters now burnt at different
speeds) can anyone suggest a remedy.

Currently, I have gOS 3.0 installed, but I'd really like KDE4 and gOS
runs a modified Gnome desktop. The gOS download was burnt on the same
burner as the Kubuntu 8.10 and reads well on a number of machines, so
it seems that its the downloaded .iso that's at fault, but I'm open to
suggestions.
