Wireless works with Ubuntu 8.10, but not with Kubuntu 8.10

Well sure enough, installing kubuntu-desktop onto of Ubuntu 8.10
worked... I can connect to wireless networks in KDE.  Still very odd
that a straight Kubuntu install did not work.  I wonder what is broken.
