Sound is indeed almost always a headache, my hope of "shortly" lies in
these being Dell versions where they provide/support Ubuntu. On release
of Hardy a number of issues were fixed within a couple of weeks - sound
being one of them (disappeared for those who upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy).

For now I stick to old kernel and follow the dell linux users mailing
list and Dell's wiki for ubuntu Hardy:
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_8.04

As for difference K/Ubuntu I have a feeling (no more) that Kubuntu have
not gone down the Pulseaudio path as much as Ubuntu. But am guessing,
nothing more.
