1?  It's his previous kernel.

Because that one becomes "0" and all others increment.

... actually just the latest - you could uninstall kernels _older_ than
2.6.4.16 without changing the ordinality of 2.4.16

Also you can use "default saved" to get the last chosen kernel.  Be sure to
set the following in the automagic options:

## should update-grub add savedefault to the default options
# savedefault=true

And then run "sudo update-grub" again.
