8.04, Nvidia proprietary, failed logout

Yeah, I have this now with ATI.  If I graphically log out I can't even 
ctrl+alt+F(x) to sudo shutdown from there.  I have to reset with hardware. 
With this thread, it is comforting to know it isn't just my system.
