8.04, Nvidia proprietary, failed logout

I upgraded 7.04 -> 7.10 -> 8.04. Everything worked perfectly. But nvidia
proprietary drivers did not (I had the correct packages - nvidia-glx - for my
GeForce4). So I removed nvidia-glx package and installed binary proprietary
driver from NVidia website.

Now everything works perfectly except logout. I use kdm. Logout from KDE
results in a blank screen that does not react to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

Workaround is: switch to a text console (Ctrl-Alt-F2), login as root,
run /etc/init.d/kdm restart.

How can I fix this?
