Installation problem

Just to let you know, I had the same problems and so did a friend of mine.

on the kubuntu bug tracking system someone else said the same thing, and
thought it might be SCSI issues with Kubuntu, but my friend didn't have SCSI
in his system.

The way I got around this, albeit a time consuming one, was to start with an
earlier version of ubuntu, in my case 6.04, and upgrade one level at a time,
from 6.04 to 6.10, to 7.04, to 7.10, and finally to 8.04. This worked, but
was one heck of a workaround.

I reported this situation to the ubuntu bug site, but have not received a
reply from it.
