I know this is going a bit OT, as this is a thread about Tbird, but I too have
always used Kmail, and with Bogofilter.
When I first installed Bogofilter on my FC2 machine, there had also been
suggestions to try SA, so on my other machine, and on the FC2 distro there, I
installed SA. SA compared to Bogofilter was very slow, so I've stayed with
Bogofilter. I don't send the spam directly to the trash, but have created a
spamcheck folder, where I can quickly flick through the spam, and make sure
no ham has been misidentified. I don't think I've ever had a ham
misidentified as spam, so may soon change the filter so that it sends all
this sick stuff directly to the trash, where it belongs.
I run Bogofilter in tri-state mode, so also have an unsure box. I do get the
odd spam turning up here, as the spammers try different ways of getting past
the filters. I also get the odd ham in the unsure box, but reading the ham
mail, you can usually see why it's ended up in the unsure box.
The only problem I've really had is with filtering spam from mailing lists.
The Guarddog mailing list, which is hosted at sourceforge, and uses mailman,
is being handled by Bogofilter ok. Some ends up in the unsure box, and other
spam goes straight to my spamcheck box. The only mailing list I've never got
to grips with are the Debian lists that use Smart. Usually very little spam
turns up on these high volume lists, so I'm willing to manually deal with it,
but a while back something was accidentaly disabled in their spamfilters, and
we got a whole tidal wave of spam turning up on the list, a problem that was
soon resolved, not without a few complaints from those on the list though.
Regarding the odd bit of spam that turns up on mailing lists, I don't think we
need to complain, and thats based on the ammount of spam that turned up on
the list when the Debian lists spamfilter was accidentally disabled, as I
mention above. I think it's fair to say, if these high volume lists had no
spam filtering, that hardly any of us would stay subscribed, as dealing with
the spam would be too much of a problem.
Enough said, I suppose, as I've taken this thread a bit OT.
Nigel.
