Where are monitor etc. settings kept?

I am used to the Slackware distro where monitor etc. settings are kept 
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  On Ubuntu this file is effectively empty. Are 
Ubuntu and Kubuntu alike in this respect? If so, where are the  
settings for e.g., refresh rates,  color depth, screen sizes etc. 
actually kept?
