8.04 problem

My upgradefrom 7.10 to 8.4 went very well indeed. I do have one problem
though. I can no longer set a screen background nor do my icons show up.
This is true for both KDE and gnome. It is not true for the other users.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
