I solved the problem by reinstalling knetworkmanager (it automatically 
got rid of the others - wicd & kwlan) and followed the intructions on:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Feisty_No-Fluff?highlight=%28WifiDocs%2FDriver%29

Now everything is hunky-dory.
