If you need to share the data with other Windows computers, then use one of 
those to safely-remove the drive.

If not, then really (really, really) just format it to ext3.
(You can get a free app to read ext3 drives on Windows too, I can't recall the 
name, ext2fs I think. Works like a charm.)
