unable to add software

I have tried twice to install Kubuntu on 2 different computers.  Unlike
Ubuntu there are a lot of software omitted from the initial
installation.  When I go to add programs the list of things such as
games Thunderbird and firefox are grayed out.  I received my disks from
canonical.  the version is Kubuntu 7.10.  The add programs is
nonresponsive.  What's wrong?  Is it me or the disks?  I have a slow
dial up and so i can't easily download anything meaningful.
