The normal runlevel for Debian and its offshoots is 2, not 5.

$ runlevel
N 2

5 might work, because I think 2 through 5 are identical on Debian (and 
offshoot) systems, but 2 will definitely work.  (Assuming X11 is even 
configured on the guy's system, of course.)
