Gutsy & Hardy

Recently I did a fresh install of Gutsy on my two year old computer as a
replacement for Edgy. I also have a CD of Hardy, but I wanted to try
Gutsy first. All went well until a few days ago when my computer
suddenly died on me. Nothing worked, so I took it to the local computer
shop where it was built for me two years ago.

To save time, it turned out that the HD had completely packed in and to
help matters further the optical drive was faulty too. The latter did
not surprise me as I had been having some problems reading CD's recently.

Anyway, Gutsy has now been installed on the new HD, and I am surprised
to find a few differences. Here are some examples.

First install, no sound, I had to play with kmix to get it working. New
install, sound worked straight away.

First install I had Java Run Time working very easily via Add/Remove
programs. This time I have had to install Java manually, though I am
still trying to work out where to put the link.

Last time, I could not get Java to work in Opera, although it was fine
in Firefox. This time I am still struggling in FF but Java is working in
Opera without any trouble.

What puzzles me is that the only changes to the computer are a new HD
and a new optical drive. I have installed Gutsy this time round from the
same CD as last time.

As I mentioned above I was having problems with the original DVD drive,
especially with music CD's. Amarok would not do anything, neither would
kaffeine or KsCD. Now with the new optical drive amarok will still not
work, but both kaffeine and KsCd will now play music.

Computers, don't you just love 'em??!!

Any comments anyone?
