Thanks to everybody who helped on and off list, especially Alvar.
After installing the first library I could not get the others to load,
and then the machine froze on me.  After three freeze-ups, I decided to
download Kubuntu again, burn it to disk, and reinstall.

Because the original install was made under Kubuntu 7.10 and then
updated, I decided to make an install from Kubuntu 8.04.  It seemed to
go well, and I installed the 64bit version of Opera next, which now
works - my friend is now back!  :-)
