Hi Joris. Changing the DMA mode to SWDMA0 makes no difference.
Reading the text on bootup, it's hanging just after starting KDM, so it looks
like it's unable to start X. The graphics card has an ATI chip on it, the
other distros I've installed on this machine are using the vesa driver, as
there seem to be problems with the ATI one.
Well I've experimented a bit more. Changed the VGA setting to 640x480, and
added acpi=off to the boot line.
Press enter, and check the monitor menu, which says 640x480. Eventually X
starts, and I get a blue screen with a mouse pointer that I can move, but
everything is very small (highest resolution), and the monitor menu now shows
the highest resolution, which appears to way beyond what my monitor can
handle. I normally use 1024x768. The blue screen doesn't stay for long, and
it appears that X gives up trying.
Any suggestion on what I could add to the boot line, to force 1024x768 to be
used?
btw, I am downloading the Kubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso, as someone else
suggested, but as usual, it takes ages on dialup (50% done).
Nigel.
