Printing Problem with Hardy (*SOLVED)

That might have been it and would be consistent with what was observed. The 
printer started failing after I removed and reinstalled HPLIP from the 
repositories.

My fix was a bit more brute force. As the problem started after I reinstalled 
HPLIP from the repositories, I downloaded the most current version of HPLIP 
from the HP site and installed that (not using apt). That package contains 
the actual printer support, of course. After that was done, everything was 
working correctly.
